Perfectionism, and the shame driving it, are everywhere in our modern society and significant drivers of most psychiatric conditions. The following module is mostly on perfectionism, though shame is touched on as well. I will say a few words about shame. I believe every person should have a fundamental knowledge of shame and how it works. Consequently, I recommend that people read books on shame. The “go to” book on shame I recommend is “Letting Go of Shame: Understanding How Shame Affects Your Life,” by Ronald Potter-Efron and Patricia Potter-Efron. It is written in a straightforward manner and there are helpful exercises at the end of each chapter. At times, the authors do discuss shame in spiritual terms, so if this is not to your liking I recommend finding other books. Any amount of shame that you can heal in this lifetime will serve you well and can lower your perfectionism!
