Grounding refers to being energetically connected to the ground and is associated with the feeling of being centered and at equilibrium. When we feel grounded (or relatively grounded) our life-force flows freely through the body-mind without obstructions. Difficult emotions (fear, etc.) and energies (stress, e.g.) can block the free flow of our life force, making us feel ungrounded, anxious, spacy, out of control, or “outside of ourselves”. Grounding techniques are designed to transform difficult emotions and energies (fear, shame, sorrow, anger, stress, etc.) and bring our life-force back into the body, restoring us to tranquility.
Our ability to feel into our bodies becomes easier the more grounded we are. Therefore, doing a grounding exercise before a feeling exercise or visualization can be useful and will augment the activity. The following module covers ways to help us ground:
